Jammu, Apr 02: The Government on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that a total of 517 persons are residing in slum clusters within the jurisdiction of Katra Development Authority (KDA) and Municipal Committee Katra, with no Bangladeshi nationals found during a detailed field survey.
The details were provided in response to a starred question raised by MLA Baldev Rai Sharma, seeking details about the presence of Jhuggis/Jhompdis (slums), land ownership, and the demographic profile of residents in Katra.
As per the reply, details of slums and land ownership have been compiled based on field surveys conducted by KDA and MC Katra, with ownership particulars gathered through local sources.
Under the KDA, slums have been identified in villages, including Kundrorian (04 structures), Tara (17 structures), Kotli Bajalian (48 structures) while additional scattered structures are under private landowners.
Similarly, within the MC Katra, slum structures have been recorded across multiple wards, including: Ward No. 11, 12, 10 Adjoining Ward No. 01 and 02
These slums are situated on lands owned by various individuals, including both private owners and inherited holdings, as per locally verified records.
A total of 517 persons are residing in slum clusters in Katra, including 124 individuals in one area—primarily engaged as ragpickers and labourers—and 393 residents within the Municipal Committee Katra limits, where most work as ragpickers, hawkers, and labourers.
The government noted that the majority of slum dwellers are engaged in informal and low-income occupations, highlighting socio-economic vulnerabilities in these areas.
Importantly, the government clarified that no Bangladeshi nationals or foreign residents were found living in these slums, as per the comprehensive field survey conducted by the concerned authorities.
Officials stated that the data has been compiled through on-ground verification by KDA and MC Katra, ensuring accuracy in identifying both the number of slums and their occupants.
